The world moves at an insanely quick speed. With everyone working hard in their own ways to keep up with life, long gone are those days of silence, peace, and tranquility. Be it the roadside, traffic noise, disturbing neighbors or whatever it might be. We all need soundproofing in our lives even if we think we don’t. Now, many people do not have a very clear idea about soundproofing and what it really is and that is completely okay. It is not something that you will need to know so much about and is something very simple.

SOUND WAVES FROM UNUSUAL PLACES:

We all know that light travels faster than sound. However, keeping all the physics aside, sound pollution can at times be extremely irritating. Especially when you are trying to relax or work peacefully. Now, the noise comes from a number of different places and sources as we all know. Those being wind noise, traffic noise, and many more. However, the type of noise that we think irritates everyone the most is when it penetrates through your ceiling. There can be two possibilities to this. Firstly, your neighbor who lives upstairs is a total jerk and is constantly doing stuff that makes your daily life disturbing. Secondly, another possibility is that your ceiling is very thin and had not been made from good quality materials. Making the job of soundproofing even harder. And as the title mentions, I will be talking to you about how you can soundproof a ceiling without construction. Because let’s face it, no one wants to go through all that hassle using tools and drills to put up something on your ceiling to use as soundproofing.

There are a lot of different other methods and techniques that you can use to soundproof your ceiling very easily. And we will be talking about them all. However, if you do have a pretty thick and well-built ceiling and it’s your neighbor who is doing all the disturbance then I would suggest you go and talk to them about how it is bothering you. If you are unfortunate and they do not change then you have no other choice but to go with the ways I will talk about.

1. USE ACOUSTIC FOAM PANELS:

After spending so much of my life on finding out and testing soundproofing solutions, I can say without a doubt that soundproofing foam panels are an excellent and probably the safest way to go for. They are very cheap and affordable, easy to use and install and most importantly ideal for soundproofing a ceiling as no external construction is needed whatsoever. And most importantly, has some insane soundproofing capabilities. However, there are many different types of acoustic foams in the market. All different in their own ways. Some are made for studios, home walls, and some for ceilings. This is where you will need to be extra careful as you do not want to buy foam panels that were meant for walls. In addition, there are also a number of different foam panels at different price points. Don’t even think of going for the cheaper ones in order to save a few bucks. You will not buy them often, so make sure to get the best one.

Use Vinyl Barriers:

Acoustic foam and foam panels can turn out to be very heavy and bulky at times. In addition, not everyone might like the looks of it. As it does not add a very nice impression to your overall room. So to keep your housing interior beauty intact you can use vinyl mats. Vinyl mats are basically very thick mattress like materials that can help you with soundproofing. Starting from walls, ceilings, floors, pipes, HVAC ducts, office partition walls, computer server rooms, mechanical rooms and much more. It can do them all. Something like the Mass Loaded Vinyl 4′ X 25′ 100 sqft 1 Lb MLV Acoustic Barrier from Burning River Buys is an excellent option to go with. Placing it on your ceiling will reduce transmission of airborne noises and vibrations. As it will absorb all of it in. It may not be visible in photos, but the mats are extremely thick.

HOW TO INSTALL?

Now, vinyl mats are not as easy to install as foam pads and is rather a bit complicated. However, it’s not that hard as well. The very first and most obvious thing to do would be to take the measurements of your room ceiling and then cut the vinyl mats accordingly. As I have already mentioned, these mats are really heavy, so you would want to take someone’s assistance while you are at it. After you are done cutting it, I would recommend you to use pins or industry standard glue to stick them up the ceiling. I would suggest you use the Case of Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound from Green Glue Company (check it out on Amazon). Apply it to the back of the mats, and they should come of real good help. However, if you have a big ceiling, then you can get the bigger glue containers as well.

You can easily do it yourself and no external help is required whatsoever. Now, a major complaint about vinyl mats is that people think they cost a lot. Well, they don’t really cost a lot. However, it does cost more than acoustic foams. But that is not at all an issue. Because after testing them both out, I can say that vinyl mats perform better in soundproofing ceilings in comparison to acoustic foams. Nonetheless, both of them are excellent options. You see, most apartments today do not have well-made ceilings, forget soundproofing. So even when you walk a bit hard or talk a bit loudly. The ones living downstairs can hear it all. This is why you should always try to be as calm as possible. Because being a good neighbor always pays. That was all for today. Do check out our other articles on soundproofing.
