If you love playing loud music on your speaker and don’t want to bother others below your apartment with your noise or you want to keep your privacy intact then soundproofing your floor is essential. You might be thinking how in the world would I go about soundproofing my floor. Do not fear! Because today I will be talking about how to soundproof a floor in an apartment.
Before You Soundproof Your Floor:
- DIY VS Professional Help: If you have a big budget then getting professional help might be the way to go. But there is no need to worry, as with soundproof materials readily available online you can soundproof your apartment room yourself easily with some guidance from the internet!
- Permanent VS Temporary: Whilst most of us want to soundproof our floor permanently there are times when we might not be able to do so. Many of us rent our apartment or don’t have the financial means to tear open floorboards and install insulation. However, you can get pretty solid soundproofing with carpets and flooring!
- Naked Floor: If you have a floor that is naked then it is much easier to build your soundproof floor on top of that. Having a naked floorboard means you have many layers to play with and can easily make your floor heavily sound deadened. But do not worry! Even if you have materials on top of your floorboard you can easily remove them by yourself.
How To Soundproof A Floor In An Apartment:
- Interlocking Floor Mat.
- Carpet Padding.
- Acoustic Floor Underlayment.
- Noiseproofing Compound.
1.Interlocking Floor Mats:
This is probably the easiest way to soundproof your floor. However, this solution might not be the only solution you will be using if you want a full sound deadened room. It will help you a lot if you want something quick and easy. If you use interlocking floor mats alongside other soundproof materials, such as floor underlayment and carpet, you can achieve a good amount of soundproofing. These interlocking mats are great, especially for gym rooms and studios. A lot of the sound that you produce in your apartment will be absorbed by this and you don’t have to worry about keeping it down! So go and get these mats for your apartment and enjoy playing music or dropping the heavy barbells on the floor without having to worry much.
A slightly easier way to soundproof a floor is to get carpet padding. Whilst this method might not be as easy as interlocking mats but this will provide an ample amount of soundproofing if applied correctly. If your apartment already has carpets or you are looking forward to carpeting your apartment then you should definitely use carpet padding beneath the carpet.
You can get carpet pads that are made especially for soundproofing, such as carpet pads from CraftRugs(R). Such carpet pads will be much denser and will absorb a lot of the sound produced within your apartment. You can get professional help or can install the pads all by yourself. If you want to cover a small surface area then you can choose the smaller size as they will be much easier to install. The surface pad from CraftRugs is very durable and slip-resistant, so it’ll make sure your carpet doesn’t slip. Check out Premium Grip(TM) Rug Pad for Hard Surfaces and Carpet on Amazon.
3.Acoustic Floor Underlayment:
As stated above, if you have a naked floorboard it is much easier to build the remaining floor with different soundproofing material. However, if you already have different layers on top of your floorboards, such as carpets and vinyl, then you will need to remove them in order to install acoustic floor underlayments.
Acoustic underlayments are usually applied over subflooring and underneath your final flooring, usually hardwood, tile or laminate wood.
Acoustic underlayment is a type of material that is applied over the subflooring (many times plywood), and underneath the final flooring (wood or tile). The Laminate Flooring UNDERLAYMENT with Vapor Barrier is 3mm thick, which is great for soundproofing your floor. This underlayment will make your room very well padded and will absorb a lot of the noise produced. So, do consider checking it out if you are serious about soundproofing your apartment floor! Sound Dampening compound, such as Green Glue Noiseproofing compound, can be directly applied to the existing subfloor layer. You need to make sure the glue is between two hard surfaces. You can apply the noise-proof compound between the floorboard and the underlayment. The compound will prevent the sound from transferring from either side. So, it is great if you want to reduce noise from your downstair noisy neighbors or don’t want to bother them with your sound!

To finish off your floor soundproofing you need to choose flooring of your choice. You can choose between tiles, hardwood and laminate wood. However, before you install your final piece of flooring you need to do something. Instead of using nails to attach your flooring on top of the underlayments, use adhesive. This will help to reduce the noise even if it is a tiny bit. Also, leave a gap on the edge of the flooring to allow for expansion!
To conclude, these are some of the ways through which you can soundproof your floor inside your apartment. If you are on a budget then you can do all of this by yourself with help from a friend. Make sure to plan everything ahead and also make sure you have all the necessary tools to get the job done.
