If you are searching to look for the answer to “how to soundproof a room in an apartment” then, you are not alone. If you are someone who shares a wall with a neighbor and is tired of their noise, then trust me you are not alone. Maybe the walls are too thin and you can listen to whatever your neighbors are doing in their home. From listening to their conversations to having to bear the sound of their intimate time, it can get really frustrating. Or, maybe you just want to soundproof your room so they don’t hear what you are doing. Be it singing loudly or playing an instrument, today I will cover how to soundproof your room in an apartment.

How to soundproof a room in an apartment:

Block or reduce echo in your room.

Block or reduce sound from coming or going out through your window.

Soundproof your ceiling.

Soundproof your walls.

Floor Sound Insulation.

The Last Resort.

1.Block or reduce echo in your room:

If you are dealing with echo inside your room and want to reduce it then the best course of action would be to increase the number of furniture inside that room. Big empty rooms can create echo if there is no object in between for the sound to bounce off of. Increasing the number of furniture, wall canvas, drapes, curtains, walls etc will reduce the echo in your room.

2.Block or reduce sound from coming or going out through your window:

If you live in a busy area then chances are you are a tad bit annoyed with the noises of cars and trucks passing by. Maybe you just want to have a quiet conversation with someone or study for your upcoming test, regardless, sound from a busy road can be annoying and distracting. There are three things you could do to reduce this sound.

Number one would be a bit permanent and will definitely block your window and the view. You can install Acoustic Panels Studio Foam Wedges on your windows and block the sound both from leaving and entering your room. However, this will block your window entirely and block your view as well. Check out these Acoustic Panels Studio Foam Wedges on Amazon.

Secondly, another thing you could do is use soundproof curtains. Curtains can be more of a makeshift solution. As you can draw the curtains if you want to reduce the noise. You can use ceiling brackets to hang the curtains which as a result will reduce more sound as it will cover all the surrounding area of your window. Check these NICETOWN Blackout Curtains Panels for Bedroom on Amazon as they have very good reviews.

Thirdly, special panes of glass can be installed inside existing windows to block out road noise. These can match the style and method of opening of your existing windows, so the two work together and look great. So if your windows are double hung and open top to bottom, or if they crank out to one side, there are soundproof windows that can work with them without taking away from the overall appearance and function. This surely is a great way to Soundproof A Room In An Apartment.

3. Soundproof your ceiling:

Soundproofing your ceiling can get a bit tricky, if the layer between each floor is inherently thin, then chances are that no matter how expensive type of soundproofing you might do, it won’t help. One thing you do is contacting your landlord, if you are renting, and try and get the apartment above you to get some flooring done. It can be quite expensive, another thing you can do is get your top floor neighbor to get some thick carpeting on their floor, this will likely reduce the noise coming from their floor.

If they decline there is another way you can reduce the sound. You can get professional help and install insulation on your ceiling, which to be honest can get expensive and be a hassle, especially if you are renting. You can install Acoustic Soundproofing Studio Foam on your ceiling and this is a cheap and effective way to reduce noise from the ceiling. Make sure to choose lighter color foam for the ceiling. You can apply adhesive to stick the foam on to the upper wall/ceiling. If you opt to do this make sure you get help from a friend to help you install these. Check out Acoustic Soundproofing Studio Amazon for the best price.

4. Soundproof your walls:

There are a few ways you can soundproof your walls. If you want to stop the sound from coming from the other side of the wall, the easiest course of action would be to install/place a piece of furniture on that wall. You can place your bookshelf on the wall as this will reduce the sound from the other side of the wall and also reduce the sound from going out to the other room. Another cheap way to soundproof your room is to install foams on to your wall as they will absorb the sound inside the room making it soundproof. This might answer the question of how to soundproof your room in an apartment but it definitely won’t be a pretty one.

Often people want to filter out unwanted noise so that the sounds they do want are more clear and precise without “white” or background noise. Acoustical engineering is the science that focuses on that very process. In rooms such as recording studios or home theatres, acoustical foam can be installed to absorb unwanted sounds from the outside and provide complete soundproofing. This will not only eliminate sound from leaving and entering, but it will also look good and professional on your wall. You can opt for different colors to match your preference. You can easily apply these with some adhesive. Check out Charcoal Acoustic Panels Studio Foam Wedges on Amazon for the best price.

5.Floor Sound Insulation:

To trap noise between floors of a home or building, there are appropriate materials to use in between the floor joists and any other spaces between floors. Floor sound insulation comes in a variety of synthetic materials that are safe and effective. They are designed to be fireproof and resist the development of spores or molds that could create problems down the road. This soundproofing material is also designed to repel rodents or any other critters that like to makes homes out of spaces in your home. One common type of floor insulation is mineral wool that provides a greater amount of soundproofing than regular fiberglass insulation. Even though this might be costly and your landlord might not want to do this if you are renting. But this is a full proof way to soundproof your whole apartment.

6.The Last Resort:

If all else fails, maybe your landlord doesn’t want to let you install carpeting on your upper floor or they don’t fancy the idea of installing foam on the wallpaper. There is a couple of things you could do as a last resort. You can get a Honeywell HT350B Quiet Set Table Fan in replacement of your air conditioning unit. This fan is supposed to be very quiet and worth a shot, and finally, there is another thing you could do. If the noises are really disturbing you and making your daily life really bad you can look to rent another apartment. It is quite easy to find another apartment nowadays. So if need be, plan to move out of your apartment.

So these were all the tips. I hope I solved your quest of how to soundproof an apartment. If you found these tips useful make sure to share them with your family and friends who are suffering from a similar situation. Also, you could forward this to your neighbor/roommate maybe they will stop being so loud. All these will allow you to be loud at your home. As these will dampen the sound going outside of your house. So you can blast your sound system without worrying too much!

NOT JUST A BASEMENT:

Basements hold a very special place in all of our American hearts. Many may see it as just a floor below ground level. But for some, it is their workplace, hangout crib and not to mention the world-famous bands and multi-million dollar companies that all started in basements. Everyone wants a quite and calm basement where they can work or study peacefully. This is why today I will be talking to you about some of the cheapest ways to soundproof a basement ceiling.

DO I NEED TO SOUNDPROOF?

No matter how down below your basement might be. There will always be certain noises coming from above the house. It might be your dog running around or your kids playing around. Even someone who is working out or exercising upstairs can create irritating noises and distractions. To combat this you will need to do is soundproof your ceiling and that should be it.

HOW DO I START?

So now that you have identified that you want to soundproof your basement ceiling, there are a few things and tools that you will need to have at your disposal. These are very basic tools and almost everyone has them laying around the house. And even if you don’t, you can easily get them on Amazon. Heres a list.

Caulk Seal.

Some sort of insulation boards.

A stapler.

Drywall

Tape.

Saw

Paint of your choice.

Drills and screws.

Cheapest Ways To Soundproof A Basement Ceiling:

ATS Acoustics.

MuteX Soundproof Material.

Carpeting The Upper Floor.

1.ATS Acoustics:

The main reason why acoustic panels will always be the best soundproofing solution is mainly that how cheap they are. Acoustic soundproof panels are not only cheap but you can almost find them anywhere. However, some soundproofing experts often discourage the use of such foam pads when soundproofing your ceiling. And the reason behind this is their performance issue. These panels work great on walls but are not as great when used for soundproofing basement ceilings.

These ATS Acoustic Panels are different!

In contrast to, the ATS Acoustic Panel is completely different. They aren’t like your everyday soundproofing panels. Which you can see just by looking at them. The foam is covered with a material called microsuede. This not only enhances the looks of the panels but also allows a better performance.

Keeping the aesthetics aside, they also perform immensely well. Blocking all sorts of noise penetrating through the ceiling and allowing you to enjoy some serene time in your basement. It also controls echo so you won’t be feeling creepy while you are studying or rehearsing alone. These boards are also very long lasting because it is protected with a solid wooden frame which makes sure there aren’t any dents or damages while installing it.

Installation:

Now, the installation process is very easy as well as very interactive. They come with hooks and instructions so that you can easily install them. However, if you feel that the hooks that come with it are not ideal then you can use cleats or other ways of application. You can even glue them if you want to.

2.MuteX Soundproof Material:

If soundproof foam panels are not your thing and you want something that is more simple and more basic then you can use something called soundproofing mats or papers. Something like the MuteX Soundproof Material. The material is basically a full black roll of thick paper. Even though it is very thick, it still manages to be very lightweight and compact. These have two stages of sound barrier properties that includes Polymute Resin and Carbonwave. It can also be used in any weather condition, be it cold or hot.

Multipurpose:

The MuteX Soundproof Material is also very versatile. That means it can be used anywhere you want. Be it automobiles, industrial work. office, construction, home, walls, floors, doors and not to mention, ceilings.

Even though they work excellently well when they are used solo. We would still recommend you to use it with drywall. All you need to do is staple or glue them to drywall. And that would bring out the best in them. Drywall comes very cheaply in almost every hardware store out there.

3.CARPETING THE UPPER FLOOR:

It is very obvious that most of the noises and sounds that enter your basement actually comes from your house upstairs. And instead of soundproofing your ceiling, what you can do is soundproof the floors in your house. If you go through our articles you will see there are a number of different types of ways to soundproof your floor (check one out here). However, for your ease, I would suggest you the cheapest way. And that includes using a thick carpet on the floor in your house. This will reduce sound vibrations by a huge margin. If you want you can also put MLV mats under the carpet as well to get the maximum result. Check out TMS Mass Loaded Vinyl Mats on Amazon. You can also try putting something very heavy like a couch or any type of furniture in the place that is vertical to your basement. And that would pretty much do the job without costing you a penny.

SEAL THE GAPS:

Before you go on to undertake the process of soundproofing your ceiling with insulation boards and materials. It is very crucial that you thoroughly inspect the ceiling beforehand. Cracks and gaps are something very common in basement ceilings. All you need to do is seal these gaps and cracks with caulking seals. They will reduce sound amplification by a great margin. If you do not seal these gaps then no matter how well you soundproof your room it will be of no use.

DEPENDING ON THE SOUND:

Now, you will need to choose what kind of insulation material you will want to soundproof with. There are a number of different types of materials out there. Starting from fiberglass, drywall, MLV mats and what not. No matter which one you go for they will all serve you quite the same. However, the type of insulation you choose may vary according to the noise that is coming through the ceilings. A cautionary message would be to never use soundproof foam panels or blocks. This is mainly because they won’t come of much use to soundproof your ceilings. They will be much more effective for walls.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:

There is no doubt that the whole process of soundproofing a basement ceiling is pretty easy. However, there are a few things that you would need to always keep in mind before you go any further. First, make sure that you take off the light fixtures, ceiling fans or anything that you have stuck on the ceiling. These will become an obstacle and will make the process of soundproofing your basement ceiling a bit harder. So make sure to get them off. If you are looking to learn more about soundproofing then go and check out our other articles. If you feel like I am missing out on something then do let me know what you want me to write about next.

We all like to stay calm and quiet in our rooms because it is our personal space and we need the maximum concentration. However, it is not just our personal bedrooms, but we also want our offices, study rooms, and even our studios to completely noise free. For music or recording studios, the need for good soundproofing becomes even more significant.

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL?

There is a very famous saying that “there is nothing as cheap and cheerful”. It is cheap and nasty, and expensive and cheerful. Even though this might sound a bit harsh it is the reality for soundproofing as well. Do keep in mind that by no means am I trying to discourage you from spending a low amount of soundproofing. Budget is something that varies from person to person. What I am simply saying is that since you have decided to soundproof your room for cheap, then you have to understand that you won’t be getting the maximum amount of outcome from it, and there will always be a few flaws here and there. Nonetheless, cheaper ways of soundproofing are also available and I will surely talk about them over this article.

How to soundproof a room cheaply:

WHAT TYPE OF SOUND PROOFING ARE YOU LOOKING FOR.

EXTERNAL NOISE AND WINDOWS.

SLAMMING DOORS.

FOAM PADS AND AESTHETIC ENHANCEMENT.

WHAT TYPE OF SOUND PROOFING ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Sounds or noises that enter your room can tend to vary from time to time. As well as the place where it’s coming from. Before you even think of soundproofing your room you will need to first identify where the sound is coming from and also what type of prevention do you want. For example, if you have a recording studio and you want to soundproof it completely, then you will need to think out the process thoroughly, as even a slight wave of wind may end up destroying your precious recordings.

Or maybe, it is your tv or home theater room that needs soundproofing, so that you can enjoy a Sunday night movie with your family peacefully without any muffles or vibrating sounds. Ranty neighbors along with their menacing children can also sometimes turn out to be very irritating. Which eventually makes living peacefully a thing of the past. Identifying where the noise is coming from is very important because this will determine the ways you will need to take in order to stop that sound from entering your room.

EXTERNAL NOISE AND WINDOWS:

No matter in which part of the world you might live in, the external noise coming from roads or outside is imminent. However, there are surely cheap ways through which you can stop it. If you think it thoroughly, most of the external noise usually comes from the windows. Even through the smallest of vents, noise passes through and amplifies. A cheap way through which you can block this noise coming from windows and completely soundproof your room is simply by using a foam or blanket. It can be a very thick blanket or even panels of foam that comes with boxes. These methods will surely help to prevent external noise from entering your room.

However, if you are willing to spend a bit then I would suggest you get sound preventing curtains. Such as the Soundproof Thermal Insulated Blackout Curtain from NICETOWN (Check it out on Amazon). They are very cheap and also comes in a number of different colors. So that you can choose the ideal one for your room.

Check out our in-depth review of the Best Soundproof Curtains.

SLAMMING DOORS:

Some doors are meant to be kept closed. However, in the case for soundproofing, even if you do keep your doors shut, there will always be noises coming from the hallway or from your neighbor’s house where the wife is constantly ranting on her husband. Unless your room has a very thick and solid door, there will always be noise getting through the openings underneath.

Your doors might have leaks and gaps as well, through which noise penetrates easily. What you can do is seal those gaps with whatever you have at your disposal. A cheap method to seal the gaps would be to use putty, get the Erase-a-hole Acoustic Ceiling and Wall Putty to do this certain task and that should pretty much take care of all the small gaps and leaks. Check out Erase-a-hole Acoustic Ceiling and Wall Putty on Amazon.

However, if you think that this isn’t enough then you can always look for solid and sturdier doors on garage sales to find them for cheaper prices.

FOAM PADS AND AESTHETIC ENHANCEMENT:

We people today tend to care a lot about how our rooms look. This was not the case a few years back. Just think this for yourself. The mere concept of soundproofing your room didn’t even exist ten years back. It was usually the music studios that used to be soundproofed. However, thanks to the era of globalization and revolution of online shopping, we can easily get everything for our rooms with a click.

Nonetheless, as I was saying. If you have done even the slightest bit of research then you will have a little idea about soundproofing foam pads. So what are they? Well, soundproofing foam pads or panels are usually pieces or boards of foam that are designed specially in order to absorb sound and not let it pass through. Some people have this weird misconception that there aren’t any differences among normal foam pads and soundproofing foam pads. Check out Acoustic Panels Studio Foam Wedges on Amazon.

This is absolutely not true. First of all, these foams are usually made from different materials. These materials help to eliminate sound waves and prevent them from echoing inside a room. Foam pads or panels can be used in studios, bedrooms, offices, as well as in your living room as well. If you are not willing to cover your whole wall with foam panels then what you can simply do is put small chunks of soundproof foam in places where the noise is coming from. And that would pretty much do the trick.

THE CHEAPEST WAY POSSIBLE?

Assuming that you have come to the almost end of the article, we believe that all of the methods that we mentioned before do not fit your budget. So for you, I would like to talk about how to soundproof a room cheaply in the most cost-effective way. By just using simple items that you can find around your house. So let us see what you need to do.

FIND A BOX:

So, the first thing that you will be needing is a hard box made of some sort of solid material. Cardboard boxes would do well, as they are pretty thick. Also, they would be more able to absorb in sound.

WRAP IT UP:

The next step is that you would want to wrap this box with some sort of soundproofing material. Any heavy material with a dense texture would be ideal. Old carpets tend to have long fibers, allowing them to trap sound waves. However, if you do not have an old carpet laying around then use egg boxes, mats or even normal foam pieces.

Make sure to glue or attach the materials firmly to the box so that there aren’t any leaks whatsoever. Once you are done doing this, simply attach this box to the vents through which sound enters and pollutes your room. Even though this might not be very effective in blocking louder noises, it surely helps, given the fact that the whole process will cost you only a few cents. I hope I answered your question about how to soundproof a room cheaply, now you can enjoy your sound system without being bothered!

THE NOISY NEIGHBOR

They say that a bad neighbor will give you a needle with no thread. Well, if you are familiar with having a noisy neighbor you will say that any neighbor is better than the one who always seems to be doing something that involves bashing or noise disturbance. Neighbors can be extremely annoying. And the worst part about it is that you can’t really get rid of them. It doesn’t matter whether you are living in a two-room apartment or a bungalow. Noisy neighbors are imminent.

THEIR MANY MOODS

The most disturbing of sounds that will surely break your concentration and mood is when it comes from your neighbor upstairs. Noisy neighbors tend to have a wide array of different disturbing techniques in their arsenal. Be it walking and running around the house in shoes or heels, slamming doors, watching hilarious tv shows with the volume up and not to mention their clamorous lovemaking sessions. However, no matter how many times you go up to them with a bloated face and tell them to stop doing it, they won’t really stop. Nonetheless, you can still work your way out of this and this is where soundproofing will come into your help. The whole concept of soundproofing is a very fun and challenging one. There are a number of different ways and techniques through which you can easily prevent noises from entering your personal space and also at the same time get to learn a lot.

MANAGE THE GRUMPY LANDLORD

One of the many terrible things about living on rent is that you have to listen and obey to every single thing that your landlord says. Not to mention the uncountable times they mentioned you not to install any stuff on the walls and not ruin their apartments. If your landlord is like one of them then do make sure to discuss the issue with him and take the permission to install all that you will need to make sure that the noise from upstairs floors is reduced. Because precautions are always better than cure.

FIND WHERE THE NOISE IS COMING FROM

Now, before you go on to make your decisions and purchase some big and expensive soundproofing solution, there are a few things that you will need to keep in mind. First of all, is that if you do not have enough knowledge regarding soundproofing then you will just end up spending all your money on stuff you won’t need and stuff you won’t know how to use.

The very first thing that you will need to make sure while reducing noise from upstairs is identifying from which part of the neighbor’s house the noise is coming from, and in which part of your room is it amplifying the most. Because you will only need to soundproof that area or room in particular, and that would be it.

IS IT THAT BIG OF A HASSLE?

As I mentioned before, there are a lot of myths surrounding soundproofing. And many people think that you need to be good at tools or something and the overall process of soundproofing is a hassle. Well, you will surely need to use your hands a bit, but you can surely do it by yourself.

How To Block Out Noise From Upstairs Neighbors

Now let’s get into business and look at the number of different methods that you can use to make sure no matter what your neighbor does upstairs, you won’t be hearing a thing. The first and most reliable option to go for will be using acoustic foam panels. If you look at other articles on the site you will see that I praise acoustic foams a lot, and every bit of the praise is well deserved. This is because they perform extremely well. Blocking all sorts of noise and preventing them from entering a room. However, unlike acoustic panels used on walls, you will need to use different ones for the ceiling. As you will need to block sound from upstairs.

I would suggest you go for something like the Acoustic Foam Egg Crate Panel from Foamily. You can get a single or two pack variant which will be more than enough to deal with your sound problems. These are one of the best acoustic panels that Foamily makes. These panels are not only extremely thick but also very clean and well designed at the same time. The thickness of the panels gives it the required ability to block out the noise and the clean-cut design makes it look good on your ceiling. You shouldn’t need to worry about its performance at all, I can personally guarantee you that. Despite targeted for studio use you can also use these panels on your room ceiling as well. In addition, they are also very easy to install. Check out Latest Price Here.

MUTEX MATS

Soundproofing mats are also a super easy solution to preventing sound. The installation of mats is even easier in comparison to foams. However, the problem regarding soundproofing mats is that you will need to find the perfect one for you. There are a number of different types of soundproofing mats out there, cheap and expensive both. However, despite the wide array of choice not all of them are ideal for preventing noise. Some are just for show and won’t come to much use. You will need to spend a bit on quality material.

This is where we chose the MuteX Soundproof Material to be the ideal fit. MuteX is a very well known company and all their products are made in the USA, including the MuteX Soundproof Material. Coming to the aesthetics these mats are fully black in color and doesn’t sport any type of prints or designs whatsoever. Making it ideal for home ceiling use. Despite being so lightweight these mats can still hold out all sorts of noise. This is because it has two stages of sound barrier capabilities installed. One being Polymute Resin and the other Carbonweave. Both of these work extremely well together to keep your room in a quiet silence. No matter how hot or cold the temperatures get, the MuteX Soundproof Material will be able to bear it all. In addition, you can also use these mats for automobile, commercial, home construction, doors and on many other places as well.

CHEAP AND CHEERFUL, TO EXPENSIVE AND DELIGHTFUL

There are a number of different myths surrounding soundproofing. While some say that it’s expensive, others say that it is an extremely difficult process. Well, I would disagree with both of them. First of all, there are many different types of ways through which you can block out the noise coming from upstairs floors. And yes, there are some expensive methods and ways, but that doesn’t mean that those are the only ones available. You can block out noise from the upstairs floors by just installing some sort of soundproofing material or mats. This will be the ultimate cheapest solution.

DON’T BE THE BAD NEIGHBOR

We sometimes tend to get so focused on the faults of others that we completely forget whether we are also doing the same as well. So yes surely your neighbor upstairs makes a lot of sounds and disturbs you. However, have you ever thought of the fact whether you are doing the same to the person living under your floor? As weird as it may sound, every one of us tends to make noises in our house. Some might be unintentional. However, we should always try to keep it at a bearable limit so that it doesn’t disturb anyone. No matter how much your neighbor may annoy you. At the end of the day, you will be seeing them and living next to them on a regular basis. So always try your best to sort things out. And if that doesn’t work. Well, you know what to do then. Do make sure to check out our other soundproofing articles as well. Hopefully, you will be able to learn a lot from them as well.

They say a dog is a man’s best friend and that dogs are one of the most loyal animals out there. Well, if you have a dog yourself then you will very well know how true this is. Dogs are just adorable. We all dog owners want the best for our dogs. Don’t we? Be it food, clothes, hygiene and what not. We can never compromise or sacrifice when it comes to our dogs.

However, as much as we would like to admit it, it goes without saying that one area where our dogs are often compromised on is in their dog crates. Dog crates are something that we believe tend to hold a lot of importance in the dog’s lives. Now, I am not saying or encouraging to keep your dog in a crate or anything. But a crate really comes in handy when you are traveling or when your good boy disturbs you a lot and needs some alone time. However, what you would want to do is get a soundproof dog crate. Obviously, dog crates are now designed in a sort of a caged design, making it very easy for barking sounds to mix around and create a disturbing environment all around. Here is where having the knowledge of how to soundproof dog crate will come of immense help.

How To Soundproof Dog Crate

Now, when it comes to soundproofing a dog crate, this is sort of a complicated thing to soundproof. First of all, is because it is very small. Second is all the different spaces that are there for ventilation and good airflow for the dog inside. Nonetheless, I always like a challenging task. And hence, I believe that there isn’t anything that cannot be soundproofed. I gave a try at trying to soundproof dog crate, so let’s take a look.

When you are looking to soundproof a dog crate, you would very much want to make sure that it still holds it’s portability factor at all times. Because that is the main objective of a dog crate. So no matter which soundproofing material you might want to use, you would very much want to keep in mind that soundproofing the dog crate does not make it heavy. So to keep its portability and not make it heavy, you would want to use very lightweight soundproofing material. And in this case, I would suggest you use the SilverStone 21-Inch x 15-Inch 4mm Thick 2-Piece Sound Dampening Acoustic EP0M Silent Foam.

While most acoustic foams come in huge and chunky shapes and sizes. It becomes really difficult to work with them. Because for using it on dog crates, you would need to cut it out and what not. Making the overall process quite a hassle for many. Nonetheless, that won’t be the problem with the SilverStone 21-Inch x 15-Inch 4mm Thick 2-Piece Sound Dampening Acoustic EP0M Silent Foam. The dimensions of these foam pads are 530mm x 380mm x 4mm, making them the ideal size to be used to soundproof a dog crate. All you need to do is put these panels on the sides of the crate. However, you would want to make sure that you are not completely blacking out the whole crate, because that will create a very dark and dingy environment for the dog and it might not feel comfortable inside. Check out SilverStone 21-Inch x 15-Inch 4mm Thick 2-Piece Sound Dampening Acoustic EP0M Silent Foam on Amazon.

THE ALL SOLUTION ACOUSTIC FOAM PANEL

If you have even the slightest bit of idea about soundproofing, then you will very well know that acoustic foam panels are probably the most used soundproofing material out there. I myself talk about it a lot because of their overall ease of use process and versatility. Acoustic foam panels can be used anywhere, even to soundproof a dog crate as well. However, in this case, you would want to look out for foam panels that are a bit small in size. I would suggest you go for the 6 Pack – Acoustic Foam Sound Absorption Pyramid Studio Treatment Wall Panels from Foamily, as I think that they are the right size to be used on dog crates. Check out 6 Pack – Acoustic Foam Sound Absorption Pyramid Studio Treatment Wall Panels from Foamily on Amazon.

USE A DOG CRATE COVER

If you have a dog crate, you would very likely have a crate cover as well. However, if you do not then there is nothing to worry about. You can always get one online. For all those of you who are unaware of what a crate cover is, it is a sort of cover designed according to the shape of the crate itself. People may consider crate covers to be something very simple and basic. But the thing that often goes unnoticed is that they can be used as a soundproofing tool as well.

However, that doesn’t mean that you can use any sort of crate cover and expect it to soundproof everything. The Precision Pet Indoor/Outdoor Crate Cover is a very good crate cover and I think that it surely has the potential to absorb the noises. Thanks to it’s sturdy, heavy duty and water resistant fabric that is also immensely thick. There is double stitching on the construction, enhancing it’s durability a lot. In addition, to blocking out noises, it will also create a very good and nice environment for the dog as well. Thanks to the side mesh windows with roller shades to adjust visibility and ventilation. Check out Precision Pet Indoor/Outdoor Crate Cover on Amazon.

Now, do keep in mind that crate covers are not a certified soundproofing solution. So it surely won’t be able to provide as good soundproofing experience compared to using acoustic panels or sound absorption sheets.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR DOG

At often times, our dogs tend to disturb us and annoy us a lot. Sometimes it feels very irritating, especially when you take them outside somewhere. Nonetheless, you would have to realize that there is always a reason why they are upset and barking so much. They might feel hungry or feel uncomfortable in the environment. So do not get angry and start scolding your dog. Have patience and deal with them slowly. They will quiet down eventually.

If you have a swimming pool around your place, then you will very well know what a pool pump is. It is basically the heart of the pool and is something that keeps it running, it is the main circulation system. It looks very much like a normal motor pump and what it does is pulls the water from the pool through the skimmer and into the main drain. After that, it pushes the water through the filter and then to the main returns, and giving you clean water every time. Pool pumps usually consist of three different parts. That being the motor itself, an impeller and a lint trap.

Nonetheless, today I am not here to talk about how pool pumps are designed. As you can already indicate from the article that I will be letting you know different ways and techniques to help you to quiet a pool pump. Pool pump noise reduction is something very important and should be done on every pool pumps out there. Nonetheless, most people do not give this issue much importance. Just think about it for yourself. How peaceful would it be if you can swim on your pool with complete tranquility and without the disturbance of any sort? Pool pump machines as we know them, tend to be very noisy and disturbing, because of their powerful motors. The noise that they generate is at times very irritating.

1. GET A POOL PUMP COVER:

Now if you have read my previous article before then you will know that I tend to talk about DIY soundproofing a lot. And we also encourage doing soundproofing yourself as well. Because you can very easily soundproof anything that you like around the house with just a help of soundproofing materials and a few tools. When it comes to soundproofing materials there is a wide array of materials to chose from. So you are very well covered.

Nonetheless, in the case of pool pump noise reduction and soundproofing the pump, your options to soundproofing are very limited. Hence you can already guess that you won’t be able to carry down a wide number of different DIY soundproofing projects. However, that is no issue, because I have a solution for you. And that is in the form of American Hydro Systems 265075 PumpHaus, Above Ground Well Pump Cover.

This might look and work in a very simple and easy way, but it is much more than just a cover for your pool pump. The shape of the pump gives it the freedom to comfortably fit on any sized pool pump. This cover will work with jet pumps as well. The material on the cover is very hard and thick. So no matter how powerful the motor is or how loud noises it might make, the cover will take care of it all and make sure that no noise comes out and ruins the environment. The outer shell is rust resistance, so it will stay new and fresh for quite a long period of time. It is also non-conductive and UV resistant as well. Meaning that no harm will come to it because of the sun’s harmful rays. Do not think in any way whatsoever that the cover will hamper the pump or water flow of the motor. That will not be the case, because the cover has very good ventilation and airflow system. Check out American Hydro Systems 265075 PumpHaus, Above Ground Well Pump Cover on Amazon.

2. Horizon Industries Pump Cover Pool Pump Cover:

If you want a pump cover that is a bit more hard and solid and will also be able to block sounds in a much better way, then you can go for the Pump Cover Pool Pump Cover from Horizon Industries. Just like most pump covers, this one is also very straight and simple and there is nothing extra or anything over the top. It is designed in a full white color and has three circled vents with small holes to let the air pass in. While most pump covers are usually designed to only soundproof the motor, this rather does a lot more than that. The Horizon Industries Pump Cover Pool Pump Cover will not only keep your pump soundproofed but also very safe and secure and ensure that no damage comes to it.

The size is not much of an issue because it will easily fit in any single or two-speed pumps easily. And that is basically the ideal size for pool pumps. The outer shell is very durable and it clearly can be seen in the overall build of the cover. The shell is made from a very high-quality PVC and provides a good and sturdy cover. The installation process with most pump covers is very tough. However, with the Horizon Industries Pump Cover Pool Pump Cover, you will not face any problems like that, as no assembly whatsoever is needed. All you need to do is a drill or cut it according to the required measurements of your pool pump and then place it accordingly. Check out Horizon Industries Pump Cover Pool Pump Cover on Amazon.

3. Horizon Industries Pentair Intelliflo Pump Motor Cover:

We can safely say that Horizon Industries are one of the best manufacturers of such pump covers. And the Pentair Intelliflo Pump Motor Cover very rightly proves that so. It is styled and made in a very similar way to the previous cover that I mentioned. However, with still keeping a few similarities. Just like the other models, the Pentair Intelliflo Pump Motor Cover can very well handle everything with sheer ease. It will protect your pump from the sun and the rain and will also ensure that the motor noise stays inside and does not get out. Using this is very easy as no assembly process or anything is needed whatsoever. All you need to do is put it on top of the cover. The outer shell is very well built and has UV and corrosion resistance, giving it a very overall good built. The Pentair Intelliflo Pump Motor Cover may look very similar to the previous pump cover that I mentioned. However, after testing it out I found that the Pentair Intelliflo Pump Motor Cover is a bit sturdier and also a bit wider in size. Check out Horizon Industries Pentair Intelliflo Pump Motor Cover on Amazon.

THE DIY PROJECT:

When I started this article, I told you that there aren’t many options available when you are looking to soundproof a pool pump. And I will stick to that. However, if you are so reluctant about not spending money and getting a soundproofed pump cover, then you can try to make one at home. However, do keep in mind that I cannot guarantee it’s effectiveness. And even if it does work, you can’t really expect much from it compared to the specialized soundproofing of the pump covers.

The first and foremost thing that you would want to do is make a box or cover that will surround your pool pump. I would suggest you use plywood boards for this. Plywood boards are very cheap and also easy to work with. Make a sort of box using the plywood boards. Make sure to take the measurements beforehand and also make sure that you are making the box roomy enough.

We all have dishwashers in our homes. It is a sheer necessity in all households. As helpful and convenient as they might be, it goes without saying that dishwashers can turn out to be very noisy at times. So much so that the noise dishwashers generate can ruin conversations and also your peace during your leisure time at your house. Nonetheless, you just cannot throw away your dishwasher, can you? However, what you can do is get to learn how to soundproof a dishwasher. And in this article, I will be teaching you exactly that.

A soundproof dishwasher will look and work just as similar to any other dishwasher on the market. Soundproofing it will not lead to any changes in performance whatsoever. And this is what really stops most people from soundproofing their dishwasher as they think that it will ruin its overall performance. Well, you will be glad to know that it doesn’t and there is absolutely no problem in soundproofing a dishwasher.

SOUNDPROOFING IS EASY:

Soundproofing overall is a very easy concept. And doing it all together is very uncomplicated as well. However, when it comes to soundproofing a dishwasher, the same cannot be said. A dishwasher is an electrical appliance and has its fair share of limitations. And you have to be very careful while soundproofing it. You would also want to utilize the best from all the little options. So without any further delay, let us learn how to soundproof a dishwasher.

TAKE THE DOOR OFF:

The first and foremost thing that you would want to start with is by removing the door or door cover of the dishwasher. Do keep in mind to turn off the dishwasher’s water source and power source before you start the process. Because safety is always important. And it is always better to be safe than sorry. Once you have shifted to a safe location take a simple screwdriver and loosen the screws that you will find usually at the bottom of the door panel. Once you have done that, you can easily remove the front panel of the door. Removing the door panel will open up the inside space and you will see loads of different foam materials inside. Do not be overwhelmed by all this. Because they are pretty useless and won’t help to soundproof or anything whatsoever. Rather they would cause problems and make it hard for you to install your soundproofing materials.

MEASURE IT OUT:

Now that you have taken out the door panel and also the foam inside, the next thing would be to measure out the depth and space inside. This is where most people make a mistake. They do not take the measurements beforehand, and go straight to installing the soundproofing material. This is not the ideal solution. So make sure to get the right measurements with a measuring tape.

WHAT SOUNDPROOFING MATERIALS SHOULD YOU USE?

If you are not very familiar with them, then I would like to let you know that there are many different types of soundproofing materials available out there. All different from each other with still one single similarity, and that is being able to block and absorb all sorts of noise and sound. No matter which soundproofing material you tend to go for. Be it acoustic foams, cell foams, vinyl sheets and what not. I can assure you that you will get a very good soundproofing experience. However, as I am talking about soundproofing a dishwasher here, the best material option would be to go for sound absorbing panels, cell foams or vinyl mats. You can even use insulating blankets as well.

If you are looking to use sound absorbent panels, then go for the ADW Acoustic Panels 24” X 24” X 1” Trapezoid. These are simple and easy to install soundproofing panels with excellent sound absorption capabilities. With an NRC rating of 0.85, it can absorb all different types of sound waves. And that includes the ones coming out from your dishwasher, they are also very cheap as well. Check out ADW Acoustic Panels 24” X 24” X 1” Trapezoid on Amazon. Secondly, coming to vinyl mats, you can get the TMS Mass Loaded Vinyl 4′ X 25′ (100 sf) 1 Lb MLV Soundproofing Barrier from Trademark Soundproofing.

They are about 1/8 of an inch thick and has a high-quality STC of 27. Giving it good sound deadening powers. Check out TMS Mass Loaded Vinyl 4′ X 25′ (100 sf) 1 Lb MLV Soundproofing Barrier from Trademark Soundproofing on Amazon.

So now that you have chosen what sort of material that you would want to go for, you will need to install them. Be very careful and gentle and insert your insulation or soundproofing material into the front panel. Make sure that the overall panel of the dishwasher is strongly stuck and does not have any sort of gaps and leaks. Otherwise, all of your efforts will go in vain. Once you have done that. Screw the front panel back in place and that would be it.

WHY NOT THE BACKSIDE?

Dishwashers as noisy they can be from the front, they also do make a lot of noise from the back as well. Because when a dishwasher is running, the back part tends to hit the wall behind. It doesn’t matter if you have a high-quality dishwasher or not, this is bound to happen. However, this is a very simple issue and can easily be fixed by adding some extra vinyl mats on the back of the machine. However, do make sure to cut the mats accordingly to the shape of the ports and plugs. Because you wouldn’t want to close them with soundproofing mats.

STILL NOT SATISFIED?

It is very possible that you might not like or think that the process I mentioned is not the ideal one. Well, sorry to say, but there aren’t actually many other options available out there. You have to realize that a dishwasher is an electrical appliance, and not any part of your house or anything. So soundproofing it is not as easy as it may seem. However, one last resort for soundproofing your dishwasher is to shift it completely to another different room. It can be in the basement, the garage, or whatever. Just shift it to another room where no activity takes place, and even if that doesn’t work, what you can do is soundproof the whole room itself. Soundproofing a room these days is as easy as it gets. I have written dedicated articles and guidelines on how you can soundproof a bedroom, garage or a basement room. Be sure to check them out. All you will need are a few basic tools and equipment to work with and most importantly soundproofing materials. Soundproofing materials are the most important thing here, as I mentioned before. They will either make or break your soundproofing solution. When you are soundproofing your home you can use acoustic foam panels, insulated blankets, plywood boards, vinyl mats and many other different sorts of materials to make sure no sort of sound penetrates through.

GET A TOOLBOX:

There are a number of different DIY soundproofing solution that you can do around the house. You will just need the right tools. Speaking of tools, it always helps to keep a handy toolbox around the house. It is something that always comes to help at all times. You don’t need to spend so much on one as well. You can get the Waterloo Portable Series Tool Box and it would be more than enough. It has all the required tools that you will ever need around the house. Check out Waterloo Portable Series Tool Box on Amazon.

Did you know that doorways are one of the most usual places from which sound comes into your room or your house? Many people who are worried about the sound coming into the house or the room, usually forget about the doorway. So if you are looking for how to soundproof a doorway, then you have landed on the right article.

In this article, I will show you several ways to soundproof a doorway. Some of the steps need drilling and screwing and a bit of effort, while some steps are easy and quick to install. You might need to spend a bit of money to undergo the soundproofing procedures mentioned.

How to Soundproof a Doorway:

Use sealant to caulk the gaps and holes.

Install weatherstripping tape for the door.

Install a door sweep.

Attach Mass Loaded Vinyl.

Add soundproof panels.

Place a curtain or soundproof blanket.

Place a rug.

Buy a new solid core door.

1. Use sealant to caulk the gaps and holes:

If you look closely, you will see small holes or cracks on the edge of the door. Holes and gaps on the door are one of the main reasons for airborne noises passing through the doorway. Most of the doors have these cracks and gaps and most of us neglect caulking them.

The first step you need to do is to take a good look at your door and find the gaps and cracks. You will find most of the cracks are on the edge of the door. One pro tip is to turn off all the lights and then ask someone to hold a light behind the door. The place through which light penetrates is the place you should caulk the gaps.

To fill up large gaps on the edge of the door, I found GREAT STUFF Big Gap Filler 12 oz Insulating Foam Sealant to be one of the best sealants. This is a water-resistant airtight and paintable sealant that is perfect to fill and insulate gaps that are 1-inch or greater. Check out GREAT STUFF Big Gap Filler 12 oz Insulating Foam Sealant on Amazon.

Some doors even have small cracks which may transfer a decent amount of sound to the other side. So if you have small cracks that are less than 1-inches, it is difficult to fill these gaps with the Great Stuff Big Gap Filler. For small holes, I recommend Red Devil Small Gap Foam 12 oz because it can seal and insulate gaps and cracks up to 1″ in size.

2. Install weatherstripping tape for the door:

Filling the gaps with sealant is a cheap and affordable way to start your doorway soundproofing journey. Another affordable way is to install a weatherstripping tape for the door.

Weatherstripping tape is mainly used to keep out rain, wind, and dust passing through the door. However, they are also great for preventing sound passing through the door.

To avoid the hassle of installation, you should buy an adhesive weatherstripping tape. I recommend you to use Indoor Weather Stripping from Keeping Fun because this has unique grid adhesive backing. Just stick this weatherstripping along the door frame to create compression and an airtight seal to prevent noise passing through the door. Check out Indoor Weather Stripping from Keeping Fun on Amazon.

3. Install a door sweep:

The weatherstripping tapes are great to deal with noises coming in from the small crack around the edge of the door. However, if you take a closer look at the bottom of your door when it is closed, you will see gaps between the floor and the bottom of the door.

This gap can let in lots of noise, and that is why installing a door sweep is necessary to soundproof your doorway. The function of a door sweep is to block the noise that passes through the gap between the floor and the bottom of the door.

M-D Building Products 5090 Triple Fin Door Sweep (DV-1, 36-Inch, Silver) is our recommended product. This is made of triple fin aluminum which makes this door sweep sturdy and durable. You can also adjust this door sweep with the slotted holes.

However, you should know that installing a door sweep is not easy as installing a weatherstripping tape. Door sweeps have fasteners which must drill and screwed. So you might want to take the help of a friend if you don’t want to take the hassle of installing it. Check out M-D Building Products 5090 Triple Fin Door Sweep on Amazon.

Along with blocking the noise, door sweeps are great for keeping those insects and dust coming inside your room. Door sweeps are also good for conserving energy. For example, the cold air from your air conditioner will escape from the gap between the door bottom and the floor. However, door sweep will block this gap and reduce cold air from escaping.

4. Attach Mass Loaded Vinyl:

Mass loaded vinyl is a type of thick sheet that is a great barrier for airborne noises. If you have a studio or you use your room for home theatre and the noise of the doorway is disturbing you, then you should install the mass loaded vinyl to reduce the noise.

Our recommended mass loaded vinyl is TMS Mass Loaded Vinyl 4′ X 10′ (40 Square Feet) 1 Lb MLV Acoustic Barrier. The thickness of this material is 1/8 of an inch and the 27 STC rating is good to reduce airborne noises.

Just buy a mass loaded vinyl and cut that according to the size of your door. Then you can either attach the mass loaded vinyl with staples or if you want less hassle, you can stick it to your door with some heavy adhesive. If you want to reduce more sound, then double the layer and attach them to your door. Check out TMS Mass Loaded Viny on Amazon.

One thing you should know is that mass loaded vinyl is a bit expensive. There is some cheap mass loaded vinyl sheet, however, attaching them will not reduce much noise and will be a waste of money. So if you are willing to spend lots of money to soundproof your doorway, then you should invest in this material. Also, these sheets tend to be black in color and some people may not like to change the look of their door.

5. Add soundproof panels:

If you don’t want to spend hundred dollars on mass loaded vinyl to soundproof your doorway, you may ask how to soundproof a doorway cheaply. That’s when the acoustic foam panel comes in. They are cheap and they are a great barrier to noise specially echoes.

If you have a studio on the other side of the doorway, then installing acoustic panel is a great choice. You can purchase a 12 pack acoustic foam and use some of them to soundproof your studio as you don’t need all 12 of them to soundproof your doorway.

The 12 Pack- Acoustic Panels Studio Foam Wedges 1″ X 12″ X 12″ is one of the best acoustic panels that are affordable to buy. One thing I like about this product is that you have many colors to choose from. This product includes 12 pack of acoustic panel. Each of the panels is 1 square foot and has a thickness of 1-inch. They are great for reducing echoes and waves. Check out 12 Pack- Acoustic Panels Studio Foam Wedges on Amazon.

You can attach these acoustic foam panels with nails and hammer, however, that may damage your door and it is not recommended. However, you can use some adhesive strips or adhesive glue to install this sound dampening panel on your door. You can get Clear Glue Craft Fabric Floral Adhesive Liquid Silicone from Amazon.

6. Place a curtain or soundproof blanket:

You may think that curtains are mainly used for windows and why am I suggesting you place a soundproof curtain on your door. The reason is that curtains a are a great absorber of sound and they are excellent for dampening the sound. Also, there is no reason that you cannot install a soundproof curtain on your door.

Also, some room does not have any doors. Maybe your basement stairs do not have any door and you work or have a studio in your basement and lots of sounds comes into the basement. Also, you do not want to spend a hundred dollars on installing a soundproof door. That’s when installing a soundproof curtain comes very effective. Also, besides reducing the noise, curtains are also great for blocking light coming in and insulated curtains can also trap heat.

If you are looking for a good soundproof curtain, then I would recommend you to buy the popular NICETOWN Blackout Curtains Panels for Bedroom. You have different size and lots of colors option to match your door design. Per package contains 2 panels of this curtain that are soundproof, thermally insulated and block 85% to 99% light. Check out NICETOWN Blackout Curtains Panels for Bedroom on Amazon.

7. Place a rug:

By placing a rug near your doorway, you can reduce the noise that comes from the other side especially a hallway. Rugs can also reduce echoes and it is wise to place a rug in your hallway or basement where there are lots of echoes. Beside soundproof, rugs can also enhance the aesthetic look of your room.

Buying a thick rug can further dampen the noise. However, rugs are pretty expensive and although they dampen the sound, they are less effective to reduce noise compared to other affordable soundproofing methods. But the plus point of the rug is that they do not need any work or construction to reduce noise or echoes like some of the other methods need and they also enhance the look of your doorway or room.

You can also place an area rug near your doorway (inside your room) to bounce the noise that comes from the other side of your doorway. My recommended area rug is Safavieh Hudson Shag Collection SGH280A Ivory and Grey Moroccan Ogee Plush Area Rug. This is an extra thick 2-inch rug that is made with polypropylene fibers which makes this rug durable and long lasting. You also have the option to choose from many different sizes and many colors. Check out Safavieh Hudson Shag Collection SGH280A Ivory and Grey Moroccan Ogee Plush Area Rug on Amazon.

8. Buy a new solid core door:

Most of the doors installed in a house is a hollow core door. Hollow core doors are lightweight, thin and are a great amplifier of sound. The hollow core door is maybe one of the reasons why lots of sounds come through the doorway to your room.

By installing a solid core door, you can solve this problem. They are a thick and a great absorber of sound. You will feel a huge difference by replacing a hollow core door with a solid core door.

However, they are one of the most expensive methods to soundproof your doorway. You have to spend hundreds of dollars. Also, replacing or installing a new door is not a child’s play.

You need to have some experience or do some research before installing the door. If you think that installing a door by yourself will be hectic, then you can take help from a professional to reduce your work.

So if you have a high budget and you are a handyman, then I would suggest you install a solid core door. This will dampen a lot of noise and you will have a soundproof doorway.

However, if you do not want to spend a lot, then making the door thick and heavy can reduce the noise. So installing wood or even drywall can make the door thick and reduce noise leakage through doors.

First, purchase some drywall. Then measure the size of your door. After that, cut the drywall according to the measurement. then attach the drywall with either screw or adhesive materials. Although this will dampen the sound, however, installing drywall will not enhance the look of the door.

Conclusion:

After reading this article, you may have the knowledge that the doorway can leak a lot of noise. Soundproofing a doorway is very cheap and affordable and I hope my article will help you to do it without any hassle.
